TALK (Thinking with Academic Language & Knowledge) Cards are designed for all students to raise the level of thinking and offer academic vocabulary practice. TALK Cards also benefit a classroom setting by encouraging English learners to use high-level thinking and develop academic vocabulary. Regular use of the TALK Cards will help create opportunities for students to demonstrate their thinking ability in speaking and writing, thus enabling teachers to better identify student needs, including gifted English Learners.

Practical Ideas for Using TALK Cards in the Classroom

  1. Partner Discussions: Pair students and have them use TALK Cards to guide their conversations, using sentence stems to build academic vocabulary and explore topics in-depth. This encourages structured, high-level discussions, which is especially beneficial for English Learners.
  2. Socratic Seminars: Incorporate TALK Cards during Socratic seminars or classroom debates. Students can use the sentence stems to frame their responses, ask critical questions, and articulate their reasoning with confidence.
  3. Small Group Rotations: Set up discussion stations with different TALK Cards at each. Students rotate in various academic discussions tailored to different subjects or Depth and Complexity prompts, ensuring differentiated learning.
