Practical Suggestions for Using Q3 Question Stem Cards in the Classroom
- Daily Warm-Up Discussions: Start each day by drawing a Q3 Card to engage students in a brief whole-class discussion. The open-ended questions paired with Depth and Complexity prompts help set the tone for critical thinking from the start.
- Small Group Table Talks: Assign each small group a Q3 Card to guide their discussions. This encourages peer-to-peer interaction, with students exploring different perspectives and building on each other’s ideas.
- Socratic Seminars: Use the Q3 Cards to frame key questions during Socratic seminars or debates. The interdisciplinary prompts encourage students to think critically and connect the discussion to multiple subject areas.
- Writing Prompts: Have students choose a Q3 Card as a starting point for a reflective writing piece, essay, or journal entry. The cards’ open-ended nature allows for creative responses that deepen students’ understanding of the material.
- Assessment Tool: Use the Q3 Cards during formative assessments by having students respond to the prompts in writing or discussion. Their responses can provide insight into their critical thinking skills and understanding of the Depth and Complexity Framework.
