Workshop 1: Incorporating Depth and Complexity into Instructional Practices to Differentiate and Empower Critical Thinking

Educators face unique challenges when designing differentiated learning opportunities for students. Depth & Complexity meets those challenges, becoming the pedagogical engine that ensures students are prompted to think in a deeper manner about content. The Depth & Complexity Framework provides educators with concrete tools that help students achieve the highest levels of thinking. Based on the foundation that students should approach learning in ways similar to professionals/experts, Depth and Complexity has become the “go-to” technique for teachers to differentiate, making the traditionally scripted curriculum more open-ended. In this workshop, participants will explore proven procedures and activities for introducing the iconic prompts of Depth and Complexity and Content Imperative Icons, apply the framework to district initiatives, and leave the session ready to incorporate Depth & Complexity right away.

Workshop 2: Making Depth and Complexity Work for ME!

This workshop is designed for attendees that are familiar with the Depth & Complexity Prompts/Icons and are ready to focus on integration into their own content to create differentiated experiences for all students. Participants will build on previous knowledge and experience, engaging in strategic and focused lesson planning. Attendees will learn how to prompt students to think critically by increasing rigor through the use of iconic combinations and pathways. They will continue to practice creating Depth and Complexity differentiated task statements, moving away from scriptedness and towards student-centered learning opportunities. Ample time will be provided to design relevant products and activities that are practical and content-specific.

Workshop 3: Becoming the Expert and Planning for Differentiation

Participants that have attended workshops on the icons of Depth & Complexity and Content Imperatives will learn about another piece of the framework – Thinking Like a Disciplinarian! Attendees will focus on using each piece of the framework with their own curriculum and content. This workshop models the integration of several parts of the Depth and Complexity framework and provides attendees with time to design meaningful learning opportunities that align with their own content. Participants will feel confident in their understanding and ability to incorporate the Depth & Complexity thinking tools in anything they teach. Attendees will have opportunities to apply best practices to support students in taking ownership of their own learning and approaching the content as a disciplinarian.
